In this workshop, artists will learn to add EXCITEMENT to seascapes! Learn to paint the  transparency, movement, and reflections of water. Create a painting that is so inviting you’ll feel  that you can dive right in and swim in it. This workshop is for artists who want to excel at  watercolor painting and take their paintings to a higher level. Annie Strack is passionate about  teaching painting and will provide you with personalized instruction as she walks you through the  essential techniques and the foundational concepts of watercolor painting. Annie is known for her  friendly teaching style, making classes both fun and informative. Learn how to mix colors, plan a  composition, use values, manipulate the properties of pigments, use different types of brushes for  effects, and moreArtists of every level will come away with new knowledge and skills as Annie takes you through every stage of her painting process from A to Z. There’s something for artists of  every level, from complete beginners to advanced painters. This is one of Annie’s coveted  “Signature Seascapes Workshops” that artists love, and it’s going to fill up fast so don’t wait!

Using the reference photo (and drawing provided), students will draw the subject onto their  watercolor papers. Students may printout and trace my drawings onto their watercolor paper. We  will draw the beachscape together in class – do not draw that one in advance.

Material list:

Paper: Two pieces of watercolor paper, roughly quarter sheet size (10×14, or 11×15, or 12×16) and  at least 140 lbs. I will be working on 12×16 blocks. You can use pads, blocks, or loose paper that is  taped down. You will also need some scrap pieces upon which to test your brushstrokes.

Paint: Bring your usual palette of watercolors. At the very least, you will need to have a split  palette of primary colors, and you can never have too many shades of blue. The colors that I can’t  live without include indigo, payne’s grey, green-gold, cobalt, manganese, violet, ultramarine, ochre, and sepia, but you can use your own colors. I do NOT use many staining colors. I will use a lot of  different colors, but it’s mostly about value and chroma not so much about color! So, bring your  regular palette of colors. I recommend only using professional grade paint.

Brushes: Bring your usual assortment of watercolor brushes. I recommend natural hair (sable and  squirrel). I use mostly sizes 6 through 12 round (Kolinsky sable) bushes, and sizes 2, 4, and 6  mop/quill brushes. A few synthetic brushes are handy for lifting, and a rigger/liner is also useful.

You will also need: water containers, paper towels, eraser, pencil, masking fluid, T-square or ruler. Reference materials will be provided for the workshop.
